An Alphabet Poem #VocalNPM

A city of unknown.

Blistering as the noon day sun.

Constant is the searing heat that bakes the innocent ground.

Death lurks around every corner, sulks on each street.

Everything is dry, the life choked out of it by the aggressive sun.

Feverish tastes of stagnant air consume my mouth and parches my throat.

Gasping for a breath of fresh air my lungs search for relief to no avail.

Heated smells of sewage stuff the thin dry air.

Inhaling them burns my nose and pains me.

Juvenile and naive I spend my youth in this deathly city of sin.

Kept hostage by the soaring picturesque mountains.

Laughing in the faces of the visitors it swallows up; this city gains from their loss.

Misconception colors their minds with confusion and disorder.

Not all glamour, glitz, glitter, and gold they soon realize.

Oblivious to the dreams they've ended in this town, they leave.

Pockets empty as well as souls.

Questioning whether or not the choice to vacate here was wise.

Racketeer is this city's middle name some say, but to me it is home.

Sidewalks cracked and sweltering under my feet I walk alongside the streets of my drab habitat.

Though some may not realize, residential life exists in this dismal city.

Utopia, though it is not, life still does and can survive here, a hard concept to grasp.

Vacation spot to some, yet a place to call home for many others.

Why would anyone live in this bleak town, I ask myself as I pace through the dark.

An exhaled huff of breath is the simple answer my lips form; I stretch my neck upwards,

Yearning to see the stars in the gray night sky, drowned out by the lights of the city, I search frantically yet hopelessly.

Zombie like in the night I walk alone through my hometown; wandering, hoping for anything else this world has to offer me.
