Journey of a Lifetime
A Reflection of Childhood
Kisses and pinches
On cheeks chubby red
Cuddles and hugs
And the tuckings in bed
Spit up and diapers
Crawling on fours
Meal time and messes
But too young for chores
First steps and fumbles
Fussing and naps
First words and mumbles
Tantrum attacks
Tickles and sniffles
Giggles and jeers
Bicycle bruises
And kissed away tears
Hot Wheels and Barbie's
Robbers and cops
Firefly jars
With holes in the top
Hiccups and measles
Freckles and mumps
Scrapes, cuts, and tumbles
That leaves little bumps
Glasses and braces
For big overbites
Changing and growing
That seem overnight
From skipping down pavement
And splashes and toads
From hopscotch and jump rope
To driving down roads
In hand me down cars
For a birthday surprise
The cheer and excitement
The look in their eyes
Then dances and crushes
Flirts and first dates
First kisses and blushes
First fights and heart breaks
The time never ceasing
The days never end
Graduation and college
No more games or pretend
What is half of a lifetime
Is gone in a flash
And the joys of a childhood
Are a thing of the past
Now I'm older and wiser
With kids of my own
Grey hairs and back pains
And chills in my bones
Now my happiness comes
Not from living carefree
But the joy of my children
Is what now matters to me
