Memory Poem

As you lay on the floor,

I rush to your side.

Grandma lets herself in,

Asking for milk.

She turns you over as I call 911.

I’ve never seen someone so blue.

One, two, three, four, five.

The neighbors arrive.

In the commotion of them

Trying to protect Anna

And calling for help,

It’s just you and me on

The bathroom floor.

One, two, three, four, five.

My cousin arrives.

A surgical tech,

So he knows what to do.

I go outside needing air.

Trying to hold it together.

Anna watches Dora on the TV.

One, two, three, four, five.

The ambulance arrives.

They go into the house.

I sit on the recliner with Anna,

Not wanting her to see.

The ambulance takes off.

We follow slowly behind.

One, two, three, four, five.

But Mama,

You never arrive.
