Invisible Monsters

This poem is about fighting inner demons.

I fight invisible monsters.

Monsters only I can see and hear.

They put the weight of the world on my shoulders.

They expect me to solve everyone else's problems.

They only win,

If I let them get to me.

If I let them hold me responsible,

For events out of my control.

I took on the world,

And wouldn't settle for less.

All I wanted was happiness,

But happiness is a warm gun.

Guilt is strong.

I can't be held responsible,

For everyone else's demise.

Life is like following a treasure map.

"X" marks the spot.

But I can't swim and there is a moat,

Filled with crocodiles.

If I help a friend on the way there,

They might give me a boat with a hole in it.

Who needs paddles,

When you have hands.

Yet again, I am off course.

A doesn't connect to B.

It connects to E.

And I have no clue where these other steps

Are even located on the map.

It's like trying to put a table from Ikea together,

And having extra parts leftover.

The map is faded and has holes.

Cigarette burns on the surface.

It's crumbling and old.

Maybe if I turn it upside down,

It would make more sense.

But I can't read German.

There is no pot of gold,

At the end of this rainbow.

The leprechaun is dead and bloated.

The only hope in this life,

Is to keep your eye on the prize.

And try not to be distracted by outside forces.
