Internal Injuries
A Poem About Mental Illness
"Tell me what you're thinking"
People say with false sincerity,
Like they've felt every pain,
Like they've survived every nightmare.
"Show me where it hurts"
People say so carelessly,
Implying it must be physical,
Because the mind cannot bleed.
"Just stop overthinking"
So the mindless fools keep telling me,
As I grip onto my sanity,
Like water in a cracking glass.
"Just get over it"
I'm told as thoughts reign chaos,
They don't know the tainted promises,
Whispered from the shadows.
"It's all in your head."
At last, someone can partially see,
My head is not all that it seems,
But people don't peer past the mask,
So to the world,
"I'm Fine."
