I Thought I Knew

I thought I knew what love was when I saw you.

I thought it was sun rays on my skin & cool lemonade trickling through my bones

I thought it was warm socks out the dryer & my favorite Christmas movie on repeat

I didn’t think that it could be bad just as it is good

I didn’t think I’d feel needles in my stomach when you chose to go

I didn’t think I’d drown my pillow case with tears shed for you to be next to me

Love turns a person raw & shows the true monsters underneath

My monster was beaten into numbness

She didn’t want to feel love for anyone

But instead began to feel love for everyone too soon

She started loving people that would never love her back

She hid under the beds of people who would never check for her

She scared people with her bleeding heart always in hand

I thought I knew what love was when I saw you because you looked me in the eyes when you checked under your bed.
