I Swear I'm Not Fine
A Poem for the Ones Who Shake Hands and Smile

My life is an ocean wave.
Tossed and turned,
Bath and forth.
Upside down and sideways.
I can feel the push and pull of my brain like the air in my lungs;
Like the waves on the shore.
But it's not warm here.
There's no sand in my toes.
The water fills me up until I'm choking; gasping.
Clawing at my chest in desperation to breathe.
Why can't I breathe?
I walk the streets and converse in the same sickening exchange,
"How are you?"
"I'm fine, how are you?"
But I swear I'm not fine.
I'm not fine. I'm not fine.
My life is an ocean and I'm begging to drown.
Just ask me one more time.
I'll be fine.
