"I Am You"

A Poem

People say you have to find who you are in life,

But I wake up everyday as someone new.

These voices wrestle inside my head;

I am a monster.

And I dream dreams,

One of which follows;

The clock is ticking.

Silently I crawl up the stairs. In darkness, I tread through carpet floors, my heart beating violently throughout my body. I can feel my pulse in my feet.

The dark night swirls outside a window of the house. The storm raging outside resembles a tornado. There is no ground outside, only an abyss of nothing.

I push open a door to the upstairs. Only darkness pursues. Although I thought it not possible, my heart picks up speed.

As I hesitate outside the room I notice a dark figure on the other side of it. I slowly step one foot into the vicinity of the room and stop when I notice the hooded figure move.

In the black of the room the figure turns slowly to face me. All of a sudden my heart stops its pounding and silence prevails as I panic at what I see under its hood.

Pale white and ugly as can be, sharp teeth inside a mouth much too wide to be considered human. Pitch black eyes glare at me from under its angry eyebrows.

The sight chills my body to the bone, and I am still.

A voice calls me by name. I shudder at the sly calmness of it. The lips of the hooded creature snarl, but are not the source of the hideous voice. Instead, it comes from the creature’s mind. It spoke in my head.

“Do you not recognize me?” the creature stares intently into my eyes.

My face freezes in horror.

“I am you.”
