I Am Not a Human

A Rally Cry

I am not a human.

I am not flesh and breath,

But rather stone and ash.

No flame will warm the cold of my hands,

No blood to beat the rhythm of life in systems

Ticking like clockwork bombshells.

I am not a human.

I am a weapon made to withstand wrought iron war,

Building gates to glorify the ungrateful.

No rest for aching lungs and broken bones,

No return to places once called home,

Waiting by the door for the uniformed envelope.

I am not human.

I am not a voice built in walls of skin,

But rather a prisoner to the rally cry left echoed in empty streets.

No rights despite the bloodied ink,

No protection from the shields and swords

Sworn to protect me.

I am not human.

I am not a mess of anxiety and hurt,

But rather a stoic-faced beauty who could never feel anything unnatural.

No calm to the hurricane keeping me awake at night,

No respect or dignity outside the mask.

Debating on empty pill bottles and serrated smiles.

I am not human.

I do not control my own definition of self,

But rather am born with a designed specification of what can and cannot be.

No safety in skin stretched over bone that doesn’t quite fit,

No sanctuary from the voiced beating down even when I’m alone in bed.

Hanging by the hour minute hand.

I am a warrior.

I am the shout amongst the crowd of broken souls and broken bodies,

And I am the drumbeat signaling a stand at the front of the battlefield.

No masks left to hide the lines of age and scar behind my eyes,

No more waiting around for someone else to stand and strike,

Today is the day the world will know:

I am.
