I Am a Woman

A Spoken Word

I am a woman.

I wear pink, I wear makeup and I do everything in my power to make me feel better about myself.

Backtrack to Grade 1...

This was the time when things were much simpler. We were allowed to wear what we wanted and people didn’t judge us for our looks. The only “bad” thing that happened to us was when a boy came up to you and said “ew she has cooties.”

Fast forward to Grade 6…

People started to look at you differently. They started to judge you for what you wore and how you looked. Teachers told me that if I wore a tanktop to school… I would be distracting boys from learning… when really teachers are distracting me from learning by kicking me out of the classroom. I’m SORRY that my shoulders make it difficult for you to pay attention! I will not apologize for wearing what I want to and my teacher sexuallizing me about it. I’m not a sexual object... I am a person.

Fast forward to high school from Grade 6…

Now you need to be careful! Everyone is going to judge you! Every single thing you do and every single move you make. I have to be careful in how I present myself. Otherwise, I will forever hear the words “BITCH” and “SLUT” on replay through my head. I have to be careful because if I dress a “certain” way than I’m “asking for it.”

Fast forward to today... Where woman are portrayed as these sexual objects and as things. We are not seen as people… as humans with emotions… when you say or do something to us… it hurts. We are afraid to walk down streets and be “cat called” because we fear that something might happen to us. Afraid to go to a party and get drunk and fear that a guy might take the opportunity to pounce and take advantage. And, it doesn’t help when society influences this. Society expects us to fit ideal expectations. Which, than make us think that we ourselves are not good enough. So we fix our appearance and alter our flaws that make use who we are including our personality. Not for ourselves but for everyone else.

Fast forward right here… right now….

I am a woman.

I wear pink, I wear makeup, and I do everything in my power to make me feel better about myself.

I am a woman and I am worth it.
