She said, “hurry up and sing”“before the—"I interrupted herI knew what she was getting toThere was no need to bring it upSo I said, “Stop!”

She looked at mewith a faraway gazeshe asked me to play a songI tried to pretend I didn’t knowBut I knewThat she knewThat I knew

I started playingtears stinging my eyesI couldn’t see the stringsMy throat closed up around the sobI was holding backI couldn’t seeI couldn’t speak

I could feel her focusing on the musicMy hesitationMy paralysisbecame Her struggleHer purgatory“Hurry up and sing”but that time she was pleading

Machines beepedwhile I found my voicethat was trapped in my chestso I pushed it throughcrackling across my lipsI saw her breathe deepfrom underneath the webs of tubes

She faded awaywhile I playedher songher last songOur last songFor now
