How to Become an Artist

A Poem

Ever been in love with someone so deeply you felt as if the universe was in the palm of your hands

that the stars poured between your fingers like the first fist full of sand you ever held

and have you ever witnessed your heart break before your eyes,

shattering like a hand crafted sculpture meeting the unforgiving floor

this is the rollercoaster of emotion that comes with dating an artist

an artist is a tortured soul handcrafted in your parent’s basement

you keep it secret until it’s perfected right before you set it off into the world

and that’s where you’ve messed up

because i’ve learned that artists are cruel

one will write you a symphony that makes you feel like you’re walking on air

but they’ll sing the same songs to another person the moment gravity hits

another will convince you that every love poem was written about you and they’ll paint your eyes in the sky like the vegas lights

then they’ll quickly light fire to the poems when the lights burn out

They’ll take you to museums and parks

and they’ll kiss you to your favorite song while playing with your spine like they do their bass that you can feel in your soul

they’ll create you a world where only you two can go

a world that’ll turn empty the moment you split up

and you’ll feel as if your favorite sweater has gone missing

and that everything really was just a fiction novel to add to their shelf

an encyclopedia entry in the book of past misfortunes

they’ll move on but you’ll be stuck desperately trying to scrub the painted kisses off your cheeks until your skin bleeds

your heart will hold the world on it’s shoulders

and the only way you can rid yourself of the damages

is to create

then you’ll be the artist that was handcrafted and hidden away in their parents basement
