How Many Selfies
A Short and Reflective Poem
How many selfies am I allowed to post,
before I come off as "self obsessed"?
How proud is too proud?
You can be great,
just not the best.
Confidence is attractive!
As long as you keep it passive.
Show off your skills and passions,
in a humble, silent fashion.
Do I fit in? Or do I stand out?
Are they one in the same?
How can I be an individual,
when I can't feel myself without feeling shame?
Be yourself and be free!
Only then will you succeed.
To love yourself is all you need,
just not too much,
it's a fickle balance indeed.
So, how many selfies can I post?
No more than five, and try not to boast.

Reaching Out
I promise her. I'd do anything for her. She's my mom. Even as Lanie and Deanna are flying home, Mom is scrappy fighting dying. She lays too still in that too-big bed with all the toasty white hospital blankets, in the south tower, at the broad end of a long slow-turning corner that delivers me again to her private room with the view she can't see through, with the beeping that tells us nothing new, and all these ice chips she can't swallow, and a flood of well-intentioned nurses who cannot do a damned thing all the same.
