How I Am, I Will Stay

A Poem

How I am, I will stay.

I used to contemplate a soul mate...

To turn me to love from all hate.

I thought I needed someone before it was too late.

It was never to be...it was always my fate.

Many lessons to learn, many pages to turn.

Many times did I burn asking why me.

The questions flooded like tears over the years...

I silenced my fears and now I see.

I didn't need no one and I don't today.

I am what I am and how I am I will stay.

I have my heart and my soul...

To carry this body always.

I am what I am...

How I am I will stay.

I found a comfortable suit within this aging skin.

I used to sit alone waiting for life to begin.

Looking at others when it is I who sinned...

I hid the truth inside figuring I could never win.

I didn't need no one and I don't today.

I am what I am and how I am I will stay.

I have my heart and my soul...

To carry this body always.

I am what I am...

How I am I will stay.

I searched all over for a warm heart.

To complete me inside like a missing part.

Experience raised me near broke me...

At times tightly choked me...

But from the ending I found that I could start.

Start with all I needed to get by...

With a belief within myself shining from my eyes.

The heart I had searched for was but my own.

Now that I had discovered it...

I was home.

I didn't need no one and I don't today.

I am what I am and how I am I will stay.

I have my heart and my soul...

To carry this body always.

I am what I am...

How I am I will stay.
