I've been to places
Far and wide,
But not too far
And certainly not too wide.
I've seen different cultures
Of indigenous peoples,
But these people displaced from their land
Here in a melting pot of a home.
I do often wonder
What these places
Are really truly like, but I'm scared—
Scared that what I see and believe will be wrong.
One day I will have to
Face the facts—I'm wrong.
I don't really know
What their life is like at all.
I can try to understand all I want,
I can appreciate the adulterated forms of it in this safe place—
My home—but here's the truth:
My home is not theirs, welcome as they may be.
