Hiraeth

Once we were different. Do you remember that? When we were so young and free. Untouched by the standards of society, untarnished by the cruelty of human nature and this world. Innocent, pure... perfect...

You were kind, thoughtful, innocent, and oh so pure. You loved harder and more openly than anyone I'd ever seen. You yearned for adventure and brought a brilliance to those lives you touched... How I basked in your light... How I yearned for your attention... Your affection..

I was a rogue. I was the storm to your calm, the torrential downpour to your gentle storm, the tornado to your caressing breeze. I was harsh. I was stalwart. I was dark. I was everything I never wanted to be when you found me. I destroyed your light... twisted it into something unrecognizable with my words and callous actions.

You will never understand the depths of my remorse for what I have done to you... My sorrow for the loss of what once was bright...

Alas, we cannot return to where we have been, or I would have done many things differently. But it doesn't matter now, for as I sit here, trying to piece you back together, I realize I cannot fix you. You do not want to be fixed. You relish in the darkness I created. You are fixated on the monsters that now hound you. Like a prison guard, they shackle you to your demons, and you are incapable of remembering what you were before them... And, no matter how hard I try... How I try to fit your pieces back together... I will never be able to return you to your former glory... I will never be able to save you...

For one cannot fix something that wants to remain broken...

Even though... I wish I could....
