Here Lies the Hopeless Romantic
A Poem for the Dying Heart

He looks outside of his parlor window on a stormy April night.
The air is misty and the rainfall is picking up at a staggering rate.
In the distance he starts to see the outlines of familiar faces.
They are shaped by the showers and are highlighted by the flashing of lightning on the dark horizon.
Each lightning strike reveals the visage of a love lost.
After the passing of each face, he takes a swig of whiskey.
He looks past the mist into a cemetery just a few yards away across the street.
He notices a gravestone when the lightning flashes over it.
It reads,
HERE LIES THE HOPELESS ROMANTIC
2009-2016
His arms shake as he downs the glass and walks to bed.
