Hello My Name Is

A Very Personal Poem About My Self-worth

Hello,

My name is Miranda.

According to William Shakespeare, the name Miranda means; "wonderful," "unique," "worthy of admiration"

According to everyone else...

Well it must mean very much less.

Hello,

My name is Miranda.

I am the type of girl who when you walk casually by on the street,

Will give you a genuine, full teethed, welcoming smile.

I am the type of girl that when you need a good time or a friend to call,

Will immediately be on my way before I can answer the phone.

I am the type of girl that to anyone else who happens to take a quick glimpse at me,

Would think I've got everything in my life under control and am positively happy.

I am the type of girl who is phenomenal at deceiving others,

Who softly cries out for help under an almost always tearstained face.

I am the type of girl whose mother had her at 18-years-old,

Whose father thought of as too much of a burden at only one minute old.

I am the type of girl who is a golden shade of brown with light chocolate creamed eyes,

Who looks nothing like anyone else in the vanilla family photographs.

I am the type of girl who can drive her family apart at the age of 4,

Who couldn't keep quiet about her and not so innocent grandpa's little nasty back-room secrets.

I am the type of girl whose younger brother uses her as target practice for anything he can get his hands on,

Who won't fight back for 5 years because he's younger and so fighting back wouldn't be fair.

I am the type of girl who sees Mom work late hours at the bar just to make ends meet,

Who wakes up earlier than all other kids her age to get her brother ready for school so Mom can finally get some rest.

I am the type of girl who has lots of friends at school because I am so bright and outgoing,

Who has a tendency to pick a lot of the wrong friends.

I am the type of girl who at 16 gets her first job and who finally starts to feel productive and optimistic,

Who gets to stand by as her favorite coworker and friend dies unexpectedly at the age of 19

I am the type of girl who will let others try to console me,

But who also thinks her boss giving her back rubs is not consoling.

I am the type of girl whose stepdad would gladly beat anyone up in order to defend her,

Whose stepdad enjoys frequently verbally and emotionally destroying her.

I am the type of girl who chooses to see the good in people, especially in the people I love,

Who also catches the people I love in love with each other instead.

I am the type of girl who has a tendency to pick the wrong friends,

Who apparently unfortunately as well has a tendency to pick the wrong men.

I am the type of girl that sleeps for 4 hours at night and pulls double shifts at work the next day,

Who comes home exhausted and still wont sleep from the nightmares and memories I can't keep at bay.

I am the type of girl who passes the endless nights refreshing social media,

Who curiously looks up her father who didn't want kids and sees him happy with his wife and two sweet teenage daughters.

I am the type of girl who at 19, is afraid to trust anyone and so badly wants to be alone,

Who is so heartbroken and in the same breath tired of being so alone.

I am the type of girl who everyone hurts and leaves lying in the dust,

Who is painfully scarred and the victim of things way out of my control who sometimes thinks "This has to be my fault."

I am the type of girl who still regardless of everything will ask you if you're okay,

Who knows deep down inside that I am most definitely not okay.

I am the type of girl who will never pass up the opportunity to make others feel good,

Who believes telling feel good stories and cracking jokes makes the hurt temporarily go away.

I am the type of girl who others call their best friend and their favorite person to be around,

Who in all actuality hates being surrounded and engulfed with herself.

Hello,

My name is Miranda.

According to me...

Well it does mean so very much exactly that.
