Finding Sanctuary in Each Other

Expressions of love through the written word.

I've been writing poetry since 2005 and when I was first started, I was positively mad about writing every thought that crossed my mind. There were also, embarrassingly, quite a lot of terrible love poems. I was a very young teenager back then and my work was extremely rough and unpolished.

Since graduating with my bachelor's degree in literature in 2016, I've committed myself to regularly writing and sharing my words with others. I learned a great deal about honing my craft while pursuing my degree and from living life in general. While we all experience trials with love, this collection of five poems approaches the topic in a warm and uplifting way.

From I to We

In this piece, as the title implies, my goal was to emphasize the transition from facing things alone, seeing your perspective as simply your own, to how things change when another person comes into your life. “I” quickly turns into “we” when making decisions once a relationship reaches a certain point. This is just a small snippet of the way that works, but it’s an interesting phase to reach.

Proximity

While I sought to maintain the uplifting mood, this poem does allude to some of the rockier parts of being in a long-term relationship. Couples will inevitably go through difficulties along the course of their relationship and sometimes, simply knowing that your significant other is still sticking with you through those difficulties can be the most wonderful feeling. Some couples struggle more than others, every person’s story is different, but the theme of overcoming things together is something almost everyone can relate to.

Joining Together

This piece is a bit longer than the others in this collection and a bit older. I wrote this piece while still working on my undergraduate degree. It’s from my “rhyming phase,” as I like to call it. In my journey of learning better approaches to writing poetry, I went through a few years where I wanted to make absolutely everything rhyme.

The dilemma with rhymed poetry is that either your rhymes are fantastic, and they keep the piece moving smoothly, or, on the less happy spectrum, they end up sounding contrived and hold the piece back. I’ll be the first to admit that not all the rhymes in this piece are perfect. However, it was a fun activity to come back to this piece a few years after writing it and sitting down to edit it and fix up some of the couplets.

Walking Side by Side

The specific subject matter of this piece can apply to a variety of different situations. The scenario I had in mind while writing it is a couple that has been together for a long while and has started thinking about their future together. Though in movies, we see dramatic, surprise proposals, it’s often not so bold and exciting in real life. For some couples, there’ll be random conversations about marriage along the way, though no set plans made just yet. This poem encompasses that phase in a relationship.

Worth Everything

This piece also alludes to the stormier weather that couples face. The first stanza is fairly self-explanatory, the narrator wasn’t specifically looking for someone to share his or her life with. However, in the second stanza, the “you” of the poem is introduced. I wanted to sum up the narrator’s emotional dilemma in just a few words. The use of “affliction” (while hopefully being a decent rhyme to affection!) reflects this narrator’s reluctance about leaping into a relationship. However, the title wraps the piece up neatly with a bow, since while the narrator was reluctant to jump into a relationship, the feeling of it being worth it is strong and present.

With all of that said, thank you for reading my work. I hope you enjoyed reading the poems and digging a little deeper into the meaning and logic of each piece. To stay up to date with my latest pieces, please look for me as @SleeplessAuthor on Twitter and as @SleeplessAuthoress on Instagram.
