What is a haiku?

A strange poem from Japan,

Equals five seven five.

Poetry it is,

Yoda is who I sound like,

Within the first line.

Haikus are pretty,

But sometimes are not pretty,

like this one I wrote.

Basho refined them,

gave haikus depth and meaning,

Thank God for Basho.

Basho worked for the,

Todo family until,

Yoshitada died.

Yoshitada was,

Basho's friend and his death made,

Basho very sad.

Basho ran away,

He fled to Kyoto where,

He studied classics.

Basho returned home,

and presented edited,

works by several.

It was well received,

Basho earned much respect,

He left for Edo.

Basho composed poems,

for publication but he,

was not satisfied.

Basho suffered much,

studied Zen meditation,

and he went on trips.

He recorded his,

travels and they became great,

literature works.

He created a,

large work that he named Spring Days,

in which his work was.

In Spring days Basho,

wrote his most famous haiku,

it was very great.
