Water

Many see water as a form of purity and cleanliness due to her beauty and transparency. She flows seamlessly, as if she didn’t even notice you while she plots her scheme to take us out one by one. She is magnificently, malevolently, slowly being destroyed as the forests before her, by human negligence and irresponsibility. Tossing our waste into her arms when the load is already overbearing, yet we think not of the day when she will attack, for it has happened before and does history not repeat itself. Let us revisit the year of 1912 when the marvelous and “unsinkable” ship set sail only to be snapped in half by the diabolical fist of the ocean as she opened her mouth and swallowed it whole, drowning thousands of simultaneous screams.

Much like a siren, this glistening wonder clouds the thoughts and creates false happiness through the music of smashing waves and the beauty of the sun's reflection, but we often forget that these treacherous waters encompass thousands of weapons, ready to attack and kill at the first sign of intrusion as if they were in a position of authority. My imagination runs rampant with the thought of what mystical creatures may be concealed under this transparent, yet deceptive fortress. Just think of the undiscovered species on the vast, unexplored ocean floor who will one day surface, covered in oil and tar, searching for the culprit behind their destroyed home.

She has gone by many names, Katrina, Elizabeth, Isabel, and with each outburst of anger she has grown increasingly vicious. The Beast destroys everything in her sight running amuck through our streets and our towns while innocent families seek shelter. Not even our homes are safe from her vengeful wrath as she rips them off of their very foundations. When she is finished she simply shrinks back into her chambers and seems to be at peace while reveling in the chaos she has created. It is only at this time of disaster that human eyes are opened to her deceitfulness. She can give her command at any time, and without a moment’s notice, the water will rise. Not only does she hold the secret to the evolution of life, but also to the destruction of it.

Though it may seem pure and plentiful, water is not only underwhelmed but completely underestimated for we know far too little of what lies below and have seen far too much of her aground capabilities. So remember, the next time you stand by the ocean with the seemingly gentle water calmly advancing towards the shore and creeping upwards just to find its way in between each of your toes, that you may feel infinite, but truly, we are minuscule in comparison her insidious power.
