Life's Formula at Its Best
"Grow up" they said
"To where?"
Where the grasses are green
The floor cold and dead
Names on stone in a row?
"Grow up" they said
"To where?"
Because the day i was born
I began to die
Running against time
Blasting through the shame
Creating for myself a name
Fostered by lifetime bonds and ties
"Grow up!" They said
I screamed "to where?"
A place of dreams and fears
A place of bills and guilt
Please! No! And thank you!
No! No! No! You don't get it
They said
I stared amazed and dazed
That we could be looking at the same image
Living in the same sphere
And still be so out of sync.
"Grow up!" They said
With all my strength
And the last breath
I screeched.
"To where?!"
*silence*
It suddenly dawned...
That was all the care they could give
For they too silently echoed in tears.
"TO WHERE?"

The Fish Song
The room didn’t smell like disinfectants. Its fragrance seemed light and not overbearing. A soft mixture of lavender and mint permeated the space. No beeping machines or any tubes hooked up to four-year-old Kaleeka. Her cacao skin seemed to glow from the light over her head. The family, save for one and the doctors and nurses exited the room like a trail of saints showing their last vestiges of regard.
