Forget
A Poem from the First Week of College

Loneliness is finally taking off your makeup.
Even though it feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy, you knew they weren’t coming
When you painted your lips “love-me” red.
There is finality in brushing your teeth
And hearing people laughing over the sound of running water.
The party is in your basement, you could go.
But the first time you tried, you didn’t even make it a minute.
Too crowded. Too loud.
It was like you were drowning.
To face that alone? You’d rather not try.
It’s not like they lie.
They did mean to call you.
They meant to stop by.
But the sign on your forehead said: “forget.”
And they did.
