Forever Is a Word I Abandoned

But One You Gave to Me

forever is a word I abandoned –

so many forevers

have ended for me,

becoming sometimeses

or nevers – no forever

has ever lasted as long.

Forever is a word I discounted –

it never comes true

anyway. No one

ever means it. Too much

commitment.

Too much faith.

Forever is a word you uttered –

one night, when our souls

dripped through our words.

I don’t take forever

lightly. “I’d still like to be

friends forever.”

Forever is a word you gave to me –

and I received it gladly. I, too,

want to be friends forever. As long

as I live, and then some.
