For Dave

A Poem

For Dave...

I remember how rough your hand felt on mine on my wedding day.

The day we met years earlier seemed so far away.

You were always the teacher so proud with a smile.

I had a heart but was a cocky pupil in denial.

Extreme opposites would be the understatement of the year.

You were so perfect in almost everyway, I was a prisoner of my fear.

I was a rebel without a clue until I stumbled upon you.

Then with a wink of an aged eye you showed me a life so new.

You said "when the student is ready Stevie Boy, the teacher appears"...

We then spent sacred time together you helped me silence my fears.

A new found confidence was such an unexpected welcome gift.

You wrapped your arms around this lost child and began to lift.

I remember when I had to stand in court, beaten I faced the ground.

You told me to learn from my mistakes and stand tall and be proud.

How you made me feel like a son around the time I nearly died.

I swear when I heard you passed its the only real time I've ever cried.

I still hear all the things you said to me, they resound in my head.

Although I know your body no longer walks this earth your spirit is not dead.

I feel you around me and my daughter Sometimes...

When she reminds me of a quote of yours there's a knowing in her eyes.

If I dare to say "I can't" or I become negative...

She tells me "what would Dave say?"...

I smile and feel a tingle down my spine.

It's so clear how you continue to live.

I could never explain to anyone how you changed my life for the good.

I remember the words I wrote in the last birthday card I gave to you.

"If I grow to be half the man, I will be so proud"...

I will never forget that moment when you read that next to me aloud.

Until we meet again my friend.

I live a life so influenced by you.

Following my heart and believing...

In each thing that I do.

If I grow to be Half the man...

You were upon this earth.

I will pass a happy forfilled soul...

Content with my lifes worth.
