Fences

The Seat Between Black and White

Since the day I met you

You’ve been perched comfortably

On the fence between black and white.

Too lazy to explore either side

For fear you’ll enjoy too much of one.

You’ve made a home of

Safety and monotony,

Societal norms,

And mindless activities

Yet, you have the nerve to be confused

As to why I have a hard time respecting

Your opinions,

Your decisions...

...you.

You sit on that fence

Day in and day out

Unscathed, unbothered

With no battle wounds or blood loss

And expect to be respected

As if you have done anything at all

To warrant the honor.
