Elementary School Recess

A Poem

We spent all of our time,

fussing back and forth,

forth and back,

about who started this fight and why

we couldn’t play together…

Nicely.

We tried to take a time out,

Go off in separate corners,

think about our actions,

Reflect on our naughty deeds,

Calm down, come back and try again,

Which never worked evidently…

For a minute there we even sought

refuge, sought acceptance

making a new connection,

finding a new friend,

But some way, somehow, we always

found ourselves playing together again...

If only we could stop pointing our fingers

long enough to see,

both of our indexes were dirty.

We even tried to draw lines of chalk

signifying “my side” and “your side,

The line no one crosses,

The problem was not the line but

that we were both

too busy trying to be bosses,

Creating more chaos than solving…

Ring around the Rosie,

There were no pockets full of posies,

Only symbolic ashes, ashes

Of our many clashes, clashes,

we both fell down,

never to get back up

again…

Fussing, fighting,

Pointing and blame,

Time-outs and power struggles,

Oh, these elementary school games

Except we were no longer children,

And this was not elementary school recess,

No, we were adults joined in matrimony,

Who would’ve ever guessed…

When will we wave the white flag

and stop this mess?

Stop this mess.
