Prompt for poem: Red Rose Day

Petals in the wind

leaving the rose

it once belonged to.

Pieces of my heart

fall in step

each day you are not near.

Wanting to preserve

the love I once felt.

Never saw the end coming.

Thought you would be

here forever

by my side.

Life had other plans,

leaving no choice

than to let you go.

Short amount of time

was all you gave

for one to process

what was happening.

Confusion,

disbelief,

feelings more than I could handle.

Left alone as you walked away,

speechless by your behavior.

Doubts fill my mind

of you coming to your senses.

Gone forever are the feelings

that once were strong.

Leaving only the sound

of rose petals hitting

the missing pieces of my heart.

Author's Note: Red roses stand for love, but I wanted to take a different approach with this poem and go along the lines of having your heart broken by the person you once loved.
