Don't Reach for the Apple

A Lesson in Remembering

To become invested

To see some show, hear some song

To see love in action

To feel a faint tug at your heartstrings

To remember what it felt like

The butterflies

The goosebumps

The eyes that said everything

When the mouth said nothing

The first kiss

The sensation of being held

The pleasure of a touch, an embrace

To know he cared

Cared enough to touch you, to hold you

All of the love within that embrace

To want that again

To feel loved

Wanted

Admired

For the little that you are

Somehow you were enough

But you weren’t enough

And he left

Eyes cold

Tone dead

You have recovered

Time gone by, the Healer

You allow yourself to feel again

Hope again

Want again

Remember

But to remember

To feel

The cruelest mistress of all

The pain returns

He will come again

He will leave again

In so many disguises, faces

The pain always returns

So swallow it away, poor sick bird

What you wish will only bring the pain back

You are content

You are healing

No more “he”s to return

Close the door

Pay no heed to the knocks

And whatever you do

Don’t reach for the apple again
