Don't Lose Yourself

A Poem

Here we see a girl

Being forced to do something she hates

Her passion is slipping away

Her will to try is getting weaker by the hour

She sees what's ahead of her

Bills

Debt

Exams that will never end

Her feelings try to explode onto the page

Yet she keeps them trapped inside her

She needs to finish the tasks she was given

Needs to think of her future so she bottles her past

Some time has passed now

It's been a year since she's written a story

Her poems everyone loved have stopped flowing

Her grades are A's

But they might as well be screaming for her

She's feeling trapped.

Nothing to say

All she wanted was to spread her stories

But life hit her like a bus

Now she's preparing for a life she never wanted

A cubicle awaits her.

Her worst fear

Being trapped by nothing but boringness

No freedom or inspiration

Her mind already a dull space ready for adult life

This girl who could once write a character to life or paint the ocean near her with just the words in her head

Has reinspired herself

She looks at the empty cubicles around her

She sees a connection

She sees feelings in that gray background

She finds herself and starts right back where she left off

She started to build her paper worlds again

Books upon books were made by this one girl's mind

Inspirations

Fears

Hopes

Dreams

She assembled all that she could and she didn't stop writing even when her hands grew sore

She never knew when she would have this freedom again so she used as much as she could

And with each story she created

Each poem she cried

Every simile she made

Every character that came to mind

She dug herself out of her cubicle

And she made her way back to the wonderful girl she used to be

For when she shared her creations with the world, people laughed and cried

Others grew knowledge and wisdom

Because of one girl, all these people knew what played in the deepest depths of her mind and they understood the emotions she felt

Because...

She didn't stop trying

And she didn't settle for unhappiness
