Do You See?

A Poem

Visible

Do they see me, or you, or only what they want? That is what I ask myself, as I lie awake looking at the popcorn on my ceiling wishing they were stars. Wishing I could just reach out and touch them to get a glimpse of a feeling of the utter beauty that is space. But that's not what it's about as my mind tries to lead me in a direction that is away from the painful thoughts about visibility. How it is that so many people are like those very stars, in that they are not seen when there is light? They want to be seen, like the lights of a building or in a room, that can be seen during the day and even the night. We are all like the stars though, or even the sun or the moon. For we are not always seen, we are not always given attention. Even then it hurts to know this truth, but as it is said, it is the truth.

Visibility is such an interesting thing. For it can be fleeting. It can be from or for, and be for a lifetime or a second. It depends what one is talking about of course, whether it be human, animal or object, yet still nothing is seen forever. For even the lights of the building get turned off sometimes, and the mountains crumble and the seas disappear. So how will we know when it is time to notice all this? How will we come to our senses and use the eyes we have or the ears, and nose, and hands, feet or otherwise, to "see" those things around us? And even in the moment or eternity will we truly see, or will we just take a snapshot of a moment or thing never to return to it in memory?

That is visibility, not only the seeing, but the feeling, the understanding. The taking in of a moment or lifetime and being able to process what one has seen. To accept what one has seen and felt and make a determination based on those things whether it is good or bad. So will you be like a star, or a piece of popcorn on a ceiling, or a sun, or moon? This, the world and even ourselves may never truly know. We can try to be seen, but first we must try to see.

more than just words on a page, but feelings that I can no longer keep enclosed in the vicinity of my heart or mind.
