Depression

An Imagery Experience

"Rocky waters lead to the sweetest destination"

Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses. For me, I describe it as a loss of feeling. Most people just think it means sad, but that's not the case. It's about losing everything. The way you smile, the way you laugh, losing yourself. You lose interest in your daily activities and slowly find yourself in a hole bigger than you'd imagine.

This poem is a vivid description of what it's like trying to break free from depression. Depression is viewed as (in all my poems) a dull fair skinned woman with long black hair and a black dress. Her hair is unkempt and straggling along her waist. Her eyes are cold and dark, yet vivid. She has no name, for everyone already knows whom she is. Let's begin.

"I've nearly drowned the sound of your voice,

As the waves begin to fill your lungs.

You stretch your dulled hand up and out to me, reaching for me to save you.

Your eyes, cold as night, glow that all too familiar blank stare through your tears.

Your long, black hair turning white from the tepid current.

I turn to run from you, but your long fingers grasp my ankle.

I stumble down and am greeted by the unforgiving gravel.

I scream for help, but no one hears.

My hand reaches for the warmth of the sun, but all I receive is the gloomy sky of grey.

You drag me to the water and cover my mouth with your hand.

It's cold. Thin. Fragile yet strong.

The hot tears run down my face as I struggle to lift myself onto the Boulder.

The chilled water surrounds me, the pressure caving my chest.

You hold my head under and I scream, the oxygen bubbles of my last words floating to the top.

You've got me right where you want me."
