Conformity and Nonconformity
Why do these words exist
as if they're trying to make a list
Into which group one exists
One wants to blend
into the fitting trend
While the other wants to transcend
From those who attend
Conformity says it’s because they want to fit in
So that they don’t stick out like a rodent in the trash bin
But they lose something from following the typical
They lose on what is individual
Nonconformity claims it’s because they want to be free
So they don’t end up like another apple in the tree
But they lose something from being so disconnected
They lose ability to be connected
They separate us
And makes each of us grow a fuss
One hates the other
But the other hates them
They destroy
They deceive
Until it breaks us up entirely
Nothing in this world is bad
But we choose to break the limit
To these two words that make us vivid
We need to stop this judging
We need to stop this fussing
Conformity and Nonconformity
Why do these words exist
As if they're trying make a list
into which group one exist.

Stuck in Place
Amy whistled as she walked through her front yard, looking for any sticks she could pick up and throw into the pile she and her brother were making. They had a big windstorm recently; as such, all the trees in their yard had suffered some damage in some loss of sticks. Or perhaps losing those sticks was a good thing since their trees probably needed to be pruned anyway. Amy wasn't sure.

Food — taste, smell, sensation — is a powerful conduit to the past, to memories pleasurable and painful and sometimes bittersweet, a mixture of comfort and challenge. Congratulations to Penny Fuller for Sativa — it’s a first win for Penny — a hymn to the “secret, unbounded/freedoms” of fresh peas in the pod. The narrative voice of the poem doesn’t really want to be outside, but finds joy in the green things of the earth; this is a lovely work of resilience.
