“Discrimination has a lot of layers. that make it tough for minorities to get a leg up” - Bill Gates

Dear Society,

Yes I am the mulatto, the zebra

the yellow-faced kid that you harass

me to be.

With my light brown curly ringlet

curly hair that the white girls envy.

Or my light-tanned “yellow” pigment

Skin that the black girls hate.

Or feeling like you’re the leaper in each

and every state.

It started when I was young with

my traumatic past.

I would hopelessly stand looking

at the friendships I’d never had through

The thick industrial glass.

I would fight for acceptance yeah thats

All I wanted.

But those days of ridicule and hate have

Always haunted.

Zebra…..Zebra…..Zebra they say.

Even as a an adult those words

Kick into play.

Something I was struggling with

Was my identity inside.

But now I...I...I..soon recognize.

Love is Love nor black nor white

Nor gay or straight and even to my people

Who struggle with their own height.

No one should be made fun off of their

Ethnic background.

Everyone should love

One another and stay safe and sound.

Know your worth

Know yourself

Because will try

To make you hate yourself

until the day you die.

I’m the women I am now

strong and independent and

most definitely not my parents

genetic mutation.

I belong on this earth as much as

you or anyone of god's creations.

Being biracial isn’t a curse nor

is it a jacket of shame.

so don’t be so quick to get on

your parents and blame.

I’ve learned it the hard way

with trying to fit in.

but all I got were laughs

and weird stares whenever

i’d try to be myself within.

I was too light for the blacks

and too black for the whites I

had no one to choose

But once again these things made me

who i am today and i will never

think of myself that way again I

refuse.

To anyone who struggles with their

identity i just have this to say..

Know yourself

Know your worth

Know the power that you have

Because once people see that they

will take advantage of your innocent soul

that you once had.

Dear Society, I will not make you bother

me by any means.

Sincerely I, a

proud black and white women

who used to struggled with her own self as

a teen.
