Culture
the culture of someone who doesn't belong
My culture was the beach
Once a week every summer
It was the parking lot behind the runway
It was the bag packed to get away
Its was the simple yet complex color of my skin a milky way
My culture was pain
It was five boy cousins and a brother growing up
It was me getting beat up
It was always having to keep up
It was trying not to give up
My culture was laughter
It was laughing till we peed
It was laughing when we bleed
It was laughing while they screamed
All around us
My Culture was beauty
It was never being enough
It was always being enough
It was always having enough
It was never giving enough
My culture was music
It was learning to sing
It was singing while we scream
It was the song from the truck that sold ice cream
It was the song she played then she flew from her seat
Out of the grip of heaven onto the ground of this earth and the ceiling of hell
My culture was happiness
It was always seeming happy
It was never being happy
It was trying to be happy
It was wishing, praying, hoping, happy
My culture was love
It was family love
It was unwarranted love
It was wanting love
It was craving love
It was pushing away love
My culture was complicated
It was the beach
It was pain
It was laughter
It was beauty
It was music
It was happiness
It was LOVE
My culture was this and more
My culture was different than yours
My culture did not have an ethnicity
My culture did not have a country, but a feeling.
