Cracked

A Poem

The most beautiful smile I have ever seen had cracks.

The smile was broken with ragged edges.

It showed pain, suffering, struggles and addiction.

The smile itself told you that it was never around often.

But here we are, seeing the miracle of time passing,

Of moving forward and moving on.

Of fighting demons and leaving a toxic life.

The smile gleams, yet you can tell it’s still broken.

You can see it’s strained, how shaky and shy it is.

But there is no denying that this smile, right here,

Could bring the world to its knees and send a light

Through the thick, black humour of sadness.

There is no denying that the world has tried its best to take this smile away.

But you can’t destroy something so strong, so beautiful, so loving,

It was broken, but now, only cracked.
