Courage and the Cat

From Memories of an Eccentric Man

I awoke this morning

From a sound sleep

Afraid…

I don’t know why,

But I am afraid.

I finish off a stale beer by the bed,

Light a cigarette…

Stumble across my room,

Stepping over clothes…

Shoes, and god only knows what.

I look out my window,

and something catches my eye

a shadow lurking…under a street light

It’s a cat! I said to myself.

Pacing in circles underneath the light

It’s very dark outside

What the hell is he doing

Perhaps he cannot sleep

Or perhaps he is scared like me

He feels safe, under that light

But he is not like me…

I’m the one, that is hiding inside.
