Cotton Candy Clouds
This poem is about people who live in a fantasy world and deny that life is not always sugar and spice. It’s about being a realist in a world full of people with false hopes.
Cotton candy clouds.
We floated on them.
The air was sweet.
In this fake place,
where everyone has perfect skin
and the people are made of sugar.
I am wearing my Cruella de Vil shoes.
I feel like an evil queen.
I can't stop stepping on other people's gum.
I am sick of this sticky situation.
My shoes stick to the ground,
Making it hard to escape.
We can ride unicorns into the sunset.
Everything in this life is a fantasy.
I feel like I don't belong here.
When will I wake up from this dream
turned nightmare?
When will I confront you with my truest feelings?
I am the one who put the razor blade into your apple.
I am the one who slept for seven years and woke up to
a kiss from a stranger.
I broke my glass slippers and my pumpkin carriage is rotting.
I never was meant to fit in here.
How come it took me so long to realize it?
I see through all the cracks in the glass houses.
The same cracks that others are blind to.
Why did I let you make me believe that I belonged?
Why did I believe in your sugar coated lies?
Like a dress made from scraps for an unloved stepsister,
Like a horse of a different color.
You looked down on me for being different.
You looked down on me for voicing my own truths.
You can live in your fairytale land.
With cotton candy clouds and sickening sweet air.
I will choose to approach life from a realistic point of view.
