Come Home

My dad broke my heart before any man had the chance to

"don't leave me alone inside this head of mine"

Life was comfortable,

Cozy at worst,

I was thirteen and he was leaving first,

I never saw it coming till one day he was gone,

I told myself different until it finally hit me I was wrong,

I kept telling myself he won't be gone long,

He came back once for the rest of his things

He said goodbye as I watched him leave.

I never wanted him to go,

Though I could never tell him so.

I had to play it off - act like I was glad,

Though we both knew I wasn't-

It was the understanding we had,

For deep inside we both were sad.

There was nothing left for me to do,

I'd think of thanksgiving and Christmas too,

He'd be home to visit now and then,

But he would never live there again.

Things since haven't been the same,

He's not there to play the normal games,

I love him more than he will ever know,

Theres no real way for me to show,

It finally struck me as I thought one day:

He really had to leave and go his own way,

Then as I sat there and thought some more

I realize that soon I would too walk out that door.

I wouldn't return to live and to stay,

But I would come back to visit on holidays.

Just like he left I would too,

He opened my eyes to a new point of view.

He showed me exactly what would come soon,

A way of life breaking out of the cocoon

A whole new world a life to discover

I learned so much from my only father.
