Color

A Poem

Why can’t I be like that

look like that

laugh like that

what happened, why do I have to be so different

It is easy for them

to smile, to laugh

not worry about misjudgment or doubt

society accepts them

people crave them

They are never left out

They are the heroes

recognized by all as they enforce the law

“perfection is key” they'd chant

wearing the latest craze

they would do their best to stand out

forcing to be acknowledged

demanding to be seen

wanting the attention

and always wanting to be pleased

I don’t want to be like that

look like that

laugh like that

what happened, why did I want to be so plain

From our side, it looks amazing

it invites and entrances us

coaxing us to its side

demanding us to follow the example the enforcers set

our originality for the price of acceptance from society

I don’t want to be like that

look like that

laugh like that

I refuse to become a dull gray

I will look the way I want to

laugh the way I want to

ignore the hushed tones

glares from passers-by

and show off my pants from last months collection

I will not be painted white by society

but remain the vibrant red

that I created for myself

Eventually, I hope to paint others with different colors

and they will paint others as well

we will keep painting and painting

and once we’re finished we will find a new color to start with

then we will paint again

and the world will be engulfed with never-ending color.
