Today is…
sunlight streaming
through cottage windows
as a silver tabby
long and lean reclines
on the twisted colors
of a braided rug
in full sabertooth glory
Underneath it all
is a soft simmering
the melting of summer
into fall
a profound slowness
distinct beats of change
in the air
The heat is subdued now
as if someone walked away
from the thermostat
and left the arrow button
on warm
These longer nights
darkly delicate
will gently smother that golden sun
For now there is shelter
against the raking fingers
of a harsh wind
Take the peace of a measured moment
package it
in the muted hues of fall
There is nothing
to trade for this hour
the tabby rises
and softly rubs against my arm
the silkiness envelopes my heart
the love curling around the room
simple and serene
