Climate Change

A Poem

Whenever winter starts to creep,

I wish you’d come along as well.

Like you used to.

Every year.

As the snow began to fall,

My heart would again be full,

And there you would be,

Like always.

When the temperature started to rise,

And the mud became thick.

Things got messy,

Every year.

But sometimes you’d stick around,

Until the flowers started to blossom.

And my heart would feel safe again,

Once spring had passed.

Then summer came,

And things became heated,

Our passion for each other too,

Almost, every year.

Summer love,

Always depicted as short lived.

One time we made it out together,

Another it wasn’t enough.

When the leaves first changed their color,

Sometimes we would too.

The air between us would start to get cold,

Every year.

Time to layer the blankets,

You’d no longer be there with extra warmth.

I’d calm myself and remember,

Winter will be back soon.

But eventually Winter,

Spring,

Summer,

Fall,

They all came and went.

I believed in your cycle,

Found comfort in false patterns,

Like those of earth,

But climate change is undeniable.

Now I lose more hope,

In you,

and my surroundings.

Every year.

Now, when the seasons change,

And the maybes turn to never,

I have learned that nothing really lasts.

Not anymore.
