In a heap of trouble
with no guardian, messiah, tenet;
not lost—
that would assume there's a stronghold to return to.
What happens to the bird that falls
out of the nest and lives?
With one limp wing it flutters
in circles, round and round, hoping and wandering.
In time it forgets
how it even came to such a place,
and calls out in a language dead to this world.
Hooting, crowing, and crying only brings harm.
Now, among the better-equipped beasts,
it mocks their behavior and fails.
Soon, though, it will snarl and roar,
unrecognizable from its origin,
in a heap of trouble,
with no stronghold to return to.
