Caught Between Beliefs

A Poem About Finding My Place in Religion

Shifting bodies

Swaying back and forth

Eyes closed tight

Blocking the outside

Seeing inside

Seeking inside

Knowledge.

Clutching a

Cross

Chamsa

David’s star

All locked in a tight rhythm

In a trance

Strange scents waft out

Of Christ’s doors

Community out

Of Abraham's

He

Adonai,

Amain

Aimen,

Where am I?

Caught neither here nor there

I know what I believe

I thought

Silent

Avoiding sideways glances

Pursed lips

Cold eyes

So out of place

So out of place

So out of place.

But maybe.

Maybe we are all

It describes

That describes “Him”

The coming Messiah

Begging to be deciphered

To not be fought over

But realized.

Yamakas

Psalm quotes

Dresses down to knees

Pants brushing the brim

Of shiny brown shoes

With careful brown bows

Open arms

Modern words

Protesting rabis

New ideas

Maybe I do belong

After all
