Burden

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry I tripped you

My feet are too large

I wasn't sure where to go

And I got in your way

I was just trying to stand upright

Beneath the crushing weight

Of my existence

You can spew that word at me

In all your frustration

It doesn't matter how you say it

You don't even have to say it at all

Because it always translates the same

That one word that has been the hinge

That swings the door between worlds

That one word

Burden

I am a burden

I get in the way

It would seem that I cause

All the worlds' problems

For years I would try to bury myself

Dig a little deeper

Cut a little deeper

Drink a little deeper

I would stand at the edge of the void

Begging for the courage

To leap into the blackness

All to ease the worlds' suffering

The suffering that is my existence

I thought I had gotten through all that

I thought there was hope for me

That perhaps my existence

Might not destroy me

But there's that word again

You don't have to say it

Your frustration speaks fluently

That hopelessness in your eyes

Is perfectly clear

I know what I am

Burden

I'm suffocating you

I'm wasting your time

I'm crushing your dreams

I'm holding you back

I'm sorry

I'm sorry that I have to fight to stay standing

As the weight of the world

Threatens to crush me

I'm sorry I trip over my own feet

And stumble through a world

That I don't belong in

And drag you down with me

You were the last lifeline that I had to hold onto

In the hopes of clawing my way out

From beneath the oppressing force

Of living as what I am

But now that that word has shown up again

Burden

No, you didn't say it

But I heard it in your words

I saw it in your actions

And I never want to be that

So I'll let go of my lifeline

I won't drag you down

I'll allow this life to press me down

Into the earth, back to the dust

Where I belong

Until I release you from your prison

Until I am no longer a burden
