A Poem

When I hear your voice

I forget how the passing of time sounds.

I don't think you'll hear me but

I ask you to slow down.

we can dance around the clocks

but I won't remember in the morning.

you grab a bottle's neck

and I take it as a warning.

wishes never sounded promising,

I was used to being abandoned.

where even would I go now

you practically had me branded.

I plead with the night

to take me away.

each day I practiced

how to obey.

I don't know who I am

without a collar round my neck.

pull me back and tell me "stay"

like I was just your pet.

when you said you loved me,

I really thought that was true.

I never know which will hit first

the sleeping pills or you.
