Broken Promises

The Death of a Parent

This is a short poem I wrote to my daughter's biological father. I was working out my own emotions about the situation and how to deal with giving her all of the information surrounding his death.

Broken Promises

You told me you’d never leave,

That you would always be with me.

You talked about forever,

And growing old together.

But all those words must have been lies,

All you really cared about was getting high.

You left me with our daughter alone,

She now wonders why you were called Home.

When she was little she would ask me

“Where is my Daddy?”

“Why is he in Heaven?”

At first I said “Daddy’s heart stopped beating”

I told her it happened while Daddy was sleeping.

She’s older now, and still misses you.

She doesn’t understand what happened to you.

Now that she’s older, I give her more truth,

About how you took too much medicine,

And that’s what killed you.

When she reaches those pesky teen years,

I will tell her the whole truth and I know I’ll shed tears.

I loved you so much, even though you had your flaws,

One day soon I will have to disclose them all.

For now it was an accident, a simple mistake,

That came in the night and took her Daddy away.
