Blue Eyes and Emotional Pain

This poem was written in 2002 and is about a breakup.

Do you know the difference between clear skies and emotional pain?

I really do wish you were here with me right now.

Cigarettes are my friends.

They will always listen.

They burn out like the light in your blue eyes.

I save half-smoked cigarette butts in a vintage red stained glass ashtray complete with two noticeable chips on the side of it.

One on top of the other,

Like bodies in a ditch during wartime, these half-smoked butts cling together in their ashtray grave.

Never to be dug out and smoked the rest of the way.

Losing their flavor and growing stale over time as more bodies are piled on top of them.

We were once two lost souls swimming around in the sea.

Yet we found each other against the odds and sea filled with other swimming souls.

But I couldn’t make it last a lifetime.

I wish I could sleep all day.

Blue eyes and emotional pain.

I’m crushed by the absence of you.

I want to swim against the current and trap you in my net.

I want to pull all my hair out and take back anything I may have said that made you walk away.

I should have never let you walk away.

But no matter how much I love you.

You are not required to love me back.

You are only required to breathe some sort of lonely depression because it’s over.

I am the face that appears in your dreams.

I am the face that appears in your bed when you first wake up in the morning.

I suffocated you with my love,

And it only pushed you farther away from me.

I held onto sand from the ocean in which we met.

It’s sentimental to me but means nothing to you.
