Black Mothers and Daughters

A Poem

A black son sometimes gets more love than a black daughter.

We cling to our fathers but in turn our mothers push us away.

We are expected to take what is thrown at us from our mothers or be quiet.

“She has done everything for you. She birthed you. She clothed you”

Or

“She has bought you all these nice things. You’ve never wanted for anything.”

You’re right. But what about my needs? What about the warmth I needed. What about the love. Why does a son get coddled and a daughter expected to stand strong and save face.

Our mothers, a lot of the time are the reason why we don’t get a long with other black women.

Everyone always says a little black girl always needs her father. But what about her mother.
