Black Butterfly
This was written in 2002 and is about a relationship that ended that I didn’t want to end. It's also about liking someone way more than they like you.
I smell like stolen lavender perfume,
And traces of a relationship that died only a few days ago.
It had been dying for some time,
But I don’t want to admit that.
Like a black butterfly, it was lit on fire
And only ashes remain.
It died in a smoky holocaust.
Sifting through the ashes, I see the good times and he only sees the bad.
We aren’t bad people.
We just don’t belong together.
Like two puzzle pieces that don’t fit together.
You can force them together, but it never looks quite right.
No matter how much I wanted it to work.
No matter how many straws I clutch onto.
This relationship was always destined for failure.
It was destined to die a fiery death.
I must dust my wings off and stop looking back.
I must forget what once was.
How he made me feel.
All the reasons why he was the best thing that ever happened to me.
All the reasons why I thought it could work in my mind.
Why I gave this person my heart and got nothing in return.
I need to dust the ashes off my wings
And fly to a land where the black butterfly lives.
It’s a land of sorrow.
But it is also a land of healing and overcoming the death of past relationships.
The land of forgiveness and moving on.
